(Euchoreutes naso)

Long-eared Jerboa

Does anyone here do paintings with their animals? Back when I was still working at my zoo, I was collecting animal paintings and I've been trying to make a list lately of zoos that do animal paintings so that I can work on building my art collection again.

Thanks muchly!

Betta Fish or Siamese Fighting Fish (Betta splendens)

So college pays off, even if it's just community
So I went to this zookeeping program at a local community college.
I actually still have a semester of internships left to do but I already scored my dream job.
I got hired for 1 of only 2 paid positions at a Raptor rehabilitation facility. We're currently working on getting me licensed which is awesome.

I got a few pictures to share with you guys for entertainment purposes.

My first release, we just let him go on the property because he was only found a few miles away. Surprisingly he didn't vomit the entire time he was at the center. However, our resident vulture does anytime you handle him.

A Magpie that was transferred to us for release since we had some he could hook up with and we'd be nearby to support feed if need be. Obnoxious little bird he was when he hung around.

I take a lot of pictures but I'll stop here with one of the around 30 Kestrels we got in this year so far. Most like this guy were fledges that needed a few weeks to grow up before they could leave.

National Zoo Keeper Week
Tomorrow is the last day of National Zoo Keeper Week in the US. I'll spend my lunch hour sitting at a table surrounded by AAZK information, in front of a sign that says "Ask The Zoo Keeper A Question" with an arrow pointed at me. I'm going to make a sign that says this:

3 steps to becoming a zoo keeper
1. Care about animals A LOT! This part is easy. It’s why we become zoo keepers in the first place.
2. Go to school! Almost all zoo keepers have a college degree, usually in biology, zoology, or wildlife science.
3. Volunteer! Prove that you are willing to get dirty and do the hard work it takes. If you are too young to volunteer, go to zoo camp or become a ZooTeen.

Probably every profession has a National Week. I think it's worthwhile to celebrate zookeepers, because for most people, we are the only conservationist they will ever meet. We care about animals and the environment enough to devote our lives to it. We willingly give up the possibility of great wealth to provide the best possible care for captive animals, in the hope that they will inspire children and adults to care about them as much as we do.

Hooray for us!

Grad Schools / Gap Year?
Hi everyone!

I'm starting my senior year at UNC-CH this fall and have spent the last few days Googling grad schools (would like to be a zookeeper and potentially move "up the ladder" later on). I thought there might be some kind of educational accreditation through the AZA or AAZK but haven't seen anything...so:

Does anyone have advice on grad schools or programs? My undergrad is a biology B.S. with a lot of electives in animal behavior, conservation biology, environmental science, ecology, etc. I will also have completed 3 semesters of research by the time I graduate. I've run the horse program at a summer camp for 3 years; I'm sitting at home this summer thanks to shoulder surgery but am planning to volunteer at a big cat sanctuary near campus during the 2010-2011 school year. So that's the education/experience I'm working from.

I was also wondering, for those who have been to grad school or are currently in grad school, did you take or do you recommend a gap year for internships / volunteering? I'm on the fence about taking a year between undergrad and grad school for several reasons so I thought I'd see what other people who've been there think.

Thanks for your comments and I appreciate any help / insight you can give!
